Lauren's Not Borin'

Sucker for Succulents (by Jaime Chan) and Finding Your Style as a Model

4/12/2018

Finding Your Style as a Model
Everyone has their own unique style, but that doesn’t mean it’s the same one you portray in modeling images. While you need to find your style as an individual, many models don’t create another style for themselves as a model. You need to be genuine, but also different--almost more over the top-- for modeling. How can you make yourself stand out when there are so many people in your industry shooting similar looks and styles?
  • Experiment with styles: Don’t be afraid to try on outfits you would’ve never picked for yourself. Try new colors, add ruffles, try out that new slit. Even if it’s just for you trying out outfits and taking selfies, experimenting with new styles to shoot with is essential to building your wardrobe and keeping each shoot different from the next.
  • Take a basic outfit/style and make it your own: There are always staples, white t-shirt jeans and sneakers. Adding your own twist to it, such as customizing your sneakers or wearing a unique pair of jeans that can instantly change your shoot from a typical test shoot to showing off your personality. Another way to make it your own is choosing basic clothes that accentuate your best assets. Some examples are: wearing a black crop top with a cute logo to show off your abs or high waisted jeans that have specialty rips to accentuate your long legs.
  • Base your clothes for the shoot off the photographer and fit it to their style: When you’re planning a shoot, researching the photographer and team is important, but also looking at their style. What can you wear that will bring out their style and personality while complimenting your own, while wearing something no one has worn in their photos before?
  • Research what new styles are out: There are always new styles cycling through, so try them out and shoot them. They’ll prove your on top of trends while still willing to try new things. Reading fashion magazines or following your favorite photographers to see what they’re shooting is a great way to see what new styles are trending for shoots for the new year.
